@yogthos okay, I'm normally pretty pro China, but them taking a blockchain researcher can only be seen as a win for the US

@ikanreed 😆

On the other hand, consider that it's all about where the skills are channelled. For example, the team behind Deepseek used to work on quant trading, and then when the government started cracking down on that industry they started applying their skills in a productive fashion.

@yogthos Most of the graduate degrees in science and engineering awarded in the US in the last 40-50 years have been to overseas students, many of whom stayed (very glad I didn't). The future prospect that matters is less who leaves but who chooses not to come. US is burning soft power hard now.

@yogthos A corollary effect of people staying away is weakening the institutions that previously attracted them.

Fewer international research partnerships
Reduced ability to attract funding
Lower income from international student fees
Reduced viability of depts heavily dependent on foreign students / TAs
Higher fees for smaller student numbers

All playing out in post-Brexit UK now.

@samueljohnson exactly, there are a lot of downstream effects here

@yogthos Well, a "blockchain expert," so nothing of value was lost.
